To keep sane I will start posting here again, towards the end of February to celebrate my husband's retirement we set of on a five week vacation.
We flew from Gatwick to Mauritius to spend a quiet, relaxing week, in the back ground there were the rambling of far away news from Wuhan in China about an epidemic that had made the Chinese authorities close the town and force people to stay at home to control the spread of this "new virus".
But all this was very far and we were not concerned !
Flying over Mauritius on Tuesday the 25th February was a delight, it looks green, lush and flat with sporadic mountains.
We landed safely, our temperature was checked, we were interrogated because we have so many China and Taiwan stamps in our passports but they all dated back to 6 months ago, collected our luggage, and drove our little hired car from Plaisance Airport to Mon Choisy Beach Hotel in Grand Bay, cutting through the island, whizzing past the sugar cane fields and taking in the glorious sunshine.
The welcome was warm, and we immediately felt relaxed and on holiday. By the time we got to the pool and I dipped my hand in the super warm water, we knew we were going to be happy.
Despite quite a few rainy days, we were enjoyed being lazy either by the pool or on short drives to neighbouring towns.
During this period Mauritius is quiet so the beaches were quiet. The supermarkets not busy and the island had a very cool feel.
We were regularly entertain by the local birds on our balcony:
We ate breakfast in our room, we had a kitchenette. And lunch and dinner in close by establishments. Each time the front of house welcome was impeccable and the meals tasty.
But I was longing to be amongst family and Reunion was so close and yet so far
But the news of the virus were becoming closer to home, after this week in Mauritius we were due to fly to the next door island of Reunion, where I come from and where my relatives still live. We started to think : "hope we are not stuck on Mauritius, hope they let us fly to Reunion"...
Anyway, we did get on our plane and arrived to Pierre-Fond airport in the south of Island. Taking in the views that we don't always see from above flying in from the north east.
My mother, my uncle and my cousin greeted us warmly on arrival and we packed the two cars with all our suitcases and made the short drive home, chatting and catching up with each other.
This was the start of the next 4 weeks of rest, family time, beach, delicious food, laughter, sightseeing and more.
